DESIGN PROCESS
TOPIC: Algorithmic transparency
Algorithmic transparency is the principle that the factors that influence the decisions made by algorithms should be visible, or transparent, to the people who use, regulate, and are affected by systems that employ those algorithms.

SKETCHES: ways of hiding information
DESIGN CHOICE: I chose for a rectangular shape instead of a more intricate shape due to time, because this was easier to create in processing (algorithm) and easier to trace with unity (augmented reality)
DESIGN CHOICE: The blocks display the variables + version number to make it recognisable for the augmented reality.
For this I chose a font similar to the ones used in coding programs to represent the digital aspect of an algorithm
PROCESSING: creating blocks in processing

Variables used for as basis in processing:
 • 27% of CEO’s are female, but women only
made up 11% of the Google Image results.

• women make up only 24% of the person heard,
read or seen in newspaper, television and radio.

• more than 40% of women leave tech companies
after ten years compared to 17% of men
FONT USED: Castoro by Tiro Typeworks (Kaja Slojewska)
COLOUR SCHEME
AUGMENTED REALITY: setting up, tracing in unity
AUGMENTED REALITY: exporting to iphone app
DIGITAL PUBLICATION: app icon, for unity app corresponding
with cover design physical publication
COVER DESIGN
DESIGN CHOICE using same rectangles, with less opacity,
referring to algorithmic TRANSPARENCY
APP DESIGN
CONCEPT:
The physical publication presents a storyline about a woman,
but parts of the story wont be readable due to the algorithm.
this visualizes the loss of information/narrative in algorithms.
The storyline itself will have gaps in it, representing the effect of algorithms in a life of a woman.

Via augmented reality the reader will be able to read the full story, while also given information and reasoning about applied algorithm, giving the user algorithmic transparency.

Q:HOW DO I IMPLEMENT THE EFFECT OF
AN ALGORITHM IN A PHYSICAL FORMAT?

Q:HOW DO I SHOW THE INFLUENCE ALGORITHMS HAVE
ON A WOMENS LIFE IN MY PUBLICATION?
